Stainless Steel Worktops: Pros, Cons and What to Know Before You Buy

Stainless steel has long been the surface of professional kitchens. In private homes it is now chosen for a different reason: it is a material with character that stays beautiful for years. Before you decide, it helps to know exactly what you are getting.

What makes a steel worktop appealing

Hygiene. Stainless steel is non-porous. It does not absorb liquids, odours or bacteria, and ordinary washing-up liquid is enough to clean it.

Heat and moisture. A steel worktop tolerates hot pans and water far better than most laminates or timber. For very hot cookware we still recommend a trivet to protect the finish.

A sink in one piece with the worktop. Steel can be formed and welded, so the sink becomes part of the worktop with no joint where dirt collects. At QLdecor, every sink is designed to the client’s wishes.

Longevity. A solid steel worktop does not delaminate or swell. It is a material you buy once.

A wide range of looks. Steel is not one look. Brushed and textured finishes, and patterns such as Ice Crack and Martian Rock, change the character of a kitchen completely.

Scratch protection for steel

The most common concern about steel worktops is scratching. As one of the few manufacturers in the world, we protect steel against scratching, so a QLdecor worktop keeps its appearance in everyday use.

What to consider

Thickness and construction. A thin sheet can sound hollow and flex. Our worktops are solid 304 steel in 5, 6, 8 or 10 mm, not a hollow shell.

Interior style. Steel works superbly with dark cabinetry, warm timber and stone, and less well in a soft, rustic kitchen.

Steel grade. Our standard is grade 304 stainless steel. Grade 316, with higher corrosion resistance, is available on request.

Care

Wipe with a damp cloth and washing-up liquid, then dry. Avoid strongly acidic cleaners and abrasive pads.

Who is a steel worktop for?

For anyone who values hygiene, durability and an authentic material. Every QLdecor worktop is made to measure, and the project fee is deducted after production. Explore our stainless steel worktops or request a steel sample to see and feel the finishes yourself.
